How a Star Wars trademark hints at the next movie’s title

Find out how a trademark filing indicates a possible title for the next ‘Star Wars’ movie and how trademarks are powerful at generating interest.

Star Wars fanatics who are already curious about the next movie after rushing to the theatre to watch Rogue One will be interested to know about a trademark filing by Lucasfilm submitted on Dec. 8. With the trademark application being over 2,000 words long, it seems that Lucasfilm wouldn't go through all of that rigamarole for nothing.

Find out what the new film may be named and how trademarks can be an effective way at generating interest in your product or service.

The next Star Wars movie may be called…

Based on the trademark submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office, Star Wars Episode VIII may be named "Star Wars Forces of Destiny." The Star Wars trademark application includes a long list of items of almost everything under the moon from cake decorations to Christmas ornaments.

Although the new Star Wars movie may seem light years away, a trademark filing may have revealed its title.Although the new Star Wars movie may seem light years away, a trademark filing may have revealed its title.

Take note, however, that this trademark filing is not a guarantee that this will be the movie title. Lucasfilm has filed for trademarks for terms in the past but it turned out that the terms weren't intended to be a feature film's title. For instance, Lucasfilm trademarked 'Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb," which was later used as a video game rather than for the Indiana Jones feature film of the time: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

Still, apparently the timing of the filing gives the suspicion that it's the title of the next film more credit, as a trailer is expected to be released any day now, the AVS forum wrote.

How trademarks can help you market your product or service

A trademark can be a company's most valuable marketing tool.

A trademark can really put your product or service on the map. It helps that Star Wars already has a big following, but simply releasing the name of the next movie can get fans excited about it. This is why IP Australia states that a trademark can be a company's most valuable marketing tool.

It's a way to show your customers what your product will be about and what to expect. The new movie title will likely get people speculating about the movie's plot and continuing to popularise the powerful Star Wars brand.
