Brittany Sutherland

Patent Attorney

Brittany is a registered patent and trade mark attorney. She has substantial experience in patent drafting, patent prosecution, and providing patent validity and infringement opinions, with a specialisation in life sciences, biomedical, and biomechanical inventions. Before joining Alder IP, Brittany worked as a life sciences patent examiner at IPONZ. She holds a BSc in biochemistry and microbiology. Following her undergraduate degree, Brittany completed a research project at the University of Otago, where she explored the activity landscape of triose phosphate isomerase — the first “perfect” enzyme, where the rate of catalysis equalled the rate of diffusion. Brittany’s extensive experience in the intellectual property sector, combined with her technical expertise, provides clients with a unique advantage in navigating complex patent matters.

In addition, Brittany has significant experience in preparing, filing, and prosecuting trade mark applications in Australia, New Zealand, and globally. Her expertise includes developing and implementing tailored trade mark protection strategies that align with clients’ commercialisation goals.

Outside of work, Brittany is an avid (and often injured) marathon runner, showcasing her commitment to discipline and endurance both professionally and personally.
